Poker positions explained: why the button prints money

Position — where you sit relative to the dealer button — is the most underrated edge in poker. Two players dealt identical cards can have completely different correct plays because of it.

TL;DR

Acting last is a superpower. The dealer button acts last on every street after the flop, seeing everyone’s decision before making its own. Play more hands in late position (button, cutoff), fewer in early position, and treat the blinds as the defensive seats they are.

The seats at a 5-max table

Our tables seat five, which makes positions easy to learn. Clockwise from the button:

PositionAlso calledActsHow to play it
Button (BTN)The dealerLast post-flop The best seat in poker. Play your widest range of hands, raise often, steal blinds.
Small blind (SB)First post-flop Worst seat: forced bet and worst position. Play tight; don’t “defend” junk just because you’re half-in.
Big blind (BB)Second post-flop You already paid — you may close pre-flop action cheaply, but you play the rest of the hand out of position.
Under the gun (UTG)Early positionFirst pre-flop Everyone acts after you, all hand long. Play only strong hands here.
Cutoff (CO)Late positionSecond-last post-flop Nearly as good as the button. Open up your range and attack the blinds.

At bigger tables you’d add more early/middle seats (UTG+1, hijack, and so on) — the logic stays identical: the closer to the button, the better.

Why acting last is worth chips

This is why winning players genuinely play twice as many hands from the button as from under the gun. It’s not style — it’s math.

Three position rules to start winning today

  1. Tight early, loose late. Premium hands only from UTG; widen out on the cutoff and button.
  2. Respect out-of-position pain. Calling raises from the blinds looks cheap and plays expensive.
  3. Steal when it folds to you in late position. A raise with almost anything shows an instant profit against players who fold their blinds too often — and at free tables, most do.
